0 Hanna: Movie Review

Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana star in the pursuit thriller from "Atonement" director Joe Wright.

Moving ever further away from the high-lit reputability of Pride and Prejudice and Atonement, director Joe Wright seems hellbent on proving he's a high-powered action stylist in Hanna. This sort of reverse-image, quasi-intellectual cousin to Luc Besson's The Professional stars the exceptional Saoirse Ronan as the daughter of a CIA op, raised to be the perfect soldier spy, who's unexpectedly forced to cope with a world she doesn't know and a lethal female adversary from her father's past. At once enticing and a bit dubious, this arty thriller looks to ride its sterling cast and unusual kicks to decent midrange box office.
Hanna: Movie Review
One spends a fair amount of time during Hanna wondering if the title character is actually the daughter of the determined CIA agent Marissa, played by Cate Blanchett, who pursues the girl all over Germany. Whatever the outcome of that puzzlement may be, there's little question that Ronan could eventually inherit Blanchett's mantle, so strikingly similar are their looks and excess of talent.
Hanna: Movie Review
With these two women as the heart of the film, one can scarcely go far wrong. But while there's always a lot going on, and none of it uninteresting or dull, pervading the enterprise is the distinct feeling that Wright is trying to prove something -- that he's a real filmmaker and not just a literary transcriber, that style may not just enrich but trump substance, that perhaps a genre film is only really worth doing if it's piled with loftier ideas. There was a measure of this going on in his last film, The Soloist, but that was misguided in nearly every way, whereas here, the elemental part of the mission, at least, is clear-cut.

Raised in the frigid forests of Finland, where she's taught by her macho dad Erik (Eric Bana) to hunt reindeer with a bow and arrow (accomplished vividly in the opening scene), speak several languages, memorize the encyclopedia and match her old man in self-defense skills, Hanna, at 16, has reached the point of self-sufficiency where, like an animal, she's kicked out of the nest.
Hanna: Movie Review
But before her appointed reunion with Dad in Berlin, Hanna is abducted on the orders of Marissa, a fastidious pro with a special personal interest in the girl. "Did she turn out as you'd hoped?" inquires Marissa's murderously blase henchman Isaacs (Wright regular Tom Hollander in a fabulously offbeat turn). "Better," she replies. Ruthless is Marissa's second name, but when she wants to make nice, she slips into what one takes to be her native Texas accent, the better to charm, cajole and wheedle what she wants out of people.

Once Hanna escapes -- literally from a hole beneath the sands of Morocco -- the film shifts into a different gear for a while as she is taken up by a family of slightly daft vacationing Brits. Hanna has supposedly met very few, if any, people before -- certainly not a girl her own age -- and knew no mother, so interest suddenly alights on how she observes and reacts to the family mom (Olivia Williams), whose mindset remains that of a rather confused and politically correct college student, and daughter (Jessica Barden of Tamara Drewe), a glib young thing obsessed with pop girl culture. In Spain, they allow a couple of biker boys to pick them up, but Hanna doesn't have a clue.

If some early scenes seem rather overeager to impress, Wright is just warming up. Two later set-pieces, in fact, are striking in conception and execution: A long one-take fight sequence in which Erik is followed from street level down into an underground station foyer and is forced to take on four men makes you not want to even blink, while a nocturnal chase amid and across giant shipping containers is a very impressive piece of geometric choreography.

As the yarn written by story creator Seth Lockhead and David Farr comes to a head, it's clear that not only will the matter of Hanna's origins need to be addressed, but the fairy tale motifs strewn through the film will have to pay off, which they do in a climactic hide-and-seek game played out in a decaying amusement park, actually shot at the defunct Spree Park in eastern Berlin, where Marissa is not implausibly equated with the Big Bad Wolf.

Not since Run Lola Run has a young lady been required to do as much running as Hanna does here, and in Germany no less. This Ronan does with the same absolute focus she brings to every other aspect of this demanding role, as she expresses intelligence, mental and physical resourcefulness, a bright-eyed curiosity about everything she's seeing in the world for the first time, and an abiding aloneness. Thickly made up, immaculately accoutred and coiffed with not a hair out of place, Blanchett's Marissa is every inch a woman who has willed herself to become the person she now is, in control of herself and her domain, but missing something inside. Bana fills the bill as a man destined to remain elusive in every way save for his dedication to Hanna.

The compositions devised with Wright by cinematographer Alwin Kuchler are dense and luminous, packed with information and insistent upon what the spectator is and is not meant to notice. But this is suggestive of how the overall enterprise, for all its intrigue and visceral impact, feels overly thought out, affected and forced in its stylization. Wright has got plenty of moves, but they seem applied rather than organic, noticeable in their own right rather than an inevitable part of the overall fabric. When you've got Ronan and Blanchett, not to mention Bana, Hollander and Williams, among others, you don't have to play every card you hold.

The unusual score by the Chemical Brothers is arresting but similarly attention-getting for its own sake.

0 Germany v Australia Live by Thomas Rooney

Germany host Australia tomorrow night in what should be a thoroughly entertaining international friendly at Borussia-Park in Mönchengladbach.

The hosts have a perfect record in their Euro 2012 qualification group so far, a run they maintained on Saturday with a convincing 4-0 victory over Kazakhstan.
iroslav Klose and Thomas Müller grabbed two goals apiece to put the Germans eight points clear at the top of Group A and confidence is certainly high in the camp.

The clash with Australia presents a chance for Joachim Löw to experiment a bit more with his team though so he can see which players might be able to step up in a competitive fixture in the future.

Opponents Australia will look to prove their worth against strong European opposition and get some revenge for the 4-0 defeat to Germany in last year’s World Cup in South Africa.

Low’s men were a class apart that day, but Australia will be looking to build on an Asia Cup campaign where they finished runners-up after losing out to Japan in the Qatar final.

Looking at team news for this one, as mentioned Germany are likely to make a number of changes. Mesut Özil and Sami Khedira will be rested, paving the way for the likes of André Schürrle, Mats Hummels and Marcel Schmelzer to be heavily involved.

As for Australia, they will have to cope without Tim Cahill who is still recovering from a foot injury and will rely on Harry Kewell and Nikita Rukavytsya to trouble the German defence.

"Red Riding Hood" (2011)

Eric D. Snider, Mar 11, 2011

"A dumb mess, stylish but ludicrous."

"Little Red Riding Hood," like many fairy tales, is a dark and gruesome story that ought to traumatize children more than it does. If some savvy filmmaker wanted to emphasize that side of it, really bring out the horror, maybe even make the wolf into a werewolf, establish some Gothic romance to balance the supernatural elements -- well, that would be a fine thing to do. Someone should do that.

Someone other than Catherine Hardwicke, I mean. This thing she made, called Red Riding Hood, is a dumb mess, stylish but ludicrous. Hamstrung from the outset by David Leslie Johnson's (Orphan) cheesy screenplay, Hardwicke makes things worse with a self-serious tone that's outrageously at odds with the material's inherent frivolity. For you see, this is more than just a fantasy tale set in the Middle Ages in a tiny village near a dark forest. It's also a soap opera! With forbidden passions and love triangles and everything! Hardwicke directed Twilight, you'll recall, and would apparently like to continue directing it, over and over again.

Red Riding Hood ain't little anymore, y'all! (I assume this is like when Li'l Bow Wow became just Bow Wow.) She's not even Red Riding Hood. She has a NAME, you know. It's Valerie. Played by the winsome Amanda Seyfried, Valerie is the daughter of a humble woodcutter (Billy Burke) and is betrothed to Henry (Max Irons), the son of a wealthy blacksmith. (Wealthy by 14th-century peasant standards, anyway. Everyone still lives in their own filth.) She is in love, however, with Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), a humble woodcutter who loves her dearly in return. Valerie's mother (Virginia Madsen) tells her love is irrelevant, and that arranged marriages are the way to go. She wasn't in love with Valerie's father when she married him, either, and now they are very happy together, allegedly.

As if this weren't enough drama for one teenage girl's life, Valerie must also contend with the fact that her village is occasionally terrorized by a werewolf. The villagers have kept the peace for 20 years by following certain rules, but now the truce has been broken and the werewolf is a-killin' folks again. The villagers will not stand for this! Devout Catholics, they bring in Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), a clergyman who has tangled with werewolves before. Arriving in a huge bronze elephant for some reason, Father Solomon informs these rubes that their werewolf doesn't live out in the forest full-time, like some common wolf. Don't be stupid. When the moon isn't full, the beast is a regular man or woman. In all likelihood, it is someone WHO LIVES IN THIS VERY VILLAGE!!

Well, let me tell you. If you want to stir up a crowd of superstitious bumpkins, tell them one of their neighbors is a werewolf. Some scoff, some believe, some panic, some make accusations, and some get ripped apart when the werewolf comes charging through town that night. Oh, and it's worse this time: According to Father Solomon, it's currently a "blood moon," so anyone the werewolf bites will become a werewolf too, instead of simply dying. So, you know, avoid the werewolf in general, but especially this week.

Two threads of conflict are thus established: Valerie must find a way to be with her true love, and the villagers must determine who the werewolf is and kill that person. Valerie gets accused of being a witch, too, after it's discovered that for some reason she can understand the werewolf when it talks to her. Weird enough that the werewolf wants to pause from its slaughter of the innocent and have a conversation, let alone that a non-werewolf can comprehend its language. Did the werewolf know Valerie had this ability, or has it been going around trying to talk to everyone and just now finally got a response? I'm worried that this werewolf is lonely.

Oh, Valerie does have a grandmother (Julie Christie) who gives her a red riding hood, but that's pretty insignificant compared to the other stuff that's going on.

Speaking of Valerie's grandmother, here is something that somebody says in this movie: "He thought the smell came from your grandmother!"

If you want to know another thing that somebody says in this movie, it is, "Lock him up! In the elephant!" Whereupon someone is indeed locked up in the bronze elephant that Solomon brought with him, providing an answer to the previously implied question of why Solomon brought a bronze elephant with him.

Valerie's forbidden romance with the "bad boy" Peter is played for maximum melodrama, and Peter and Henry compete for Valerie's affections as if they were characters in a Harlequin novel. In that respect, the movie knows which side its bread is buttered on, i.e., the teenage girl side. But the fantasy/horror elements hang over everything else like a fog, growing sillier and sillier as the plot unfolds, even as Hardwicke and her stone-faced cast continue to be very serious about everything. (If ever there was a time to camp it up, Gary Oldman, this would have been it.) The movie wants to feel like a romantic drama AND a supernatural thriller, but instead it feels like neither. What it probably needed was a vampire.

0 Tsunami warning issued for Hawaii

Ocimnet.com - A massive earthquake off the coast of Japan Thursday caused the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue a tsunami warning for Hawaii.

The Warning Center originally issued a watch for Hawaii, but changed it to a warning at 9:31 p.m.

The projected arrival time for the first tsunami wave in Hawaii has been revised to 3:07 a.m., according to the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Emergency Management.

"A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii," the Warning Center said, in a statement.

A tsunami is a series of long ocean waves. Each wave crest can last five to 15 minutes and cause extensive flooding of coastal areas. The danger can last for several hours after the initial wave as subsequent waves arrive.

The 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Honshu, Japan at 7:46 p.m. HST. It struck about 230 miles northeast of Tokyo.
